Abstract

A new species of Parablechnum (Blechnaceae) from the Serranía de los Yariguies, Santander, in the northeastern Andes of Colombia, a region that is notable for its high richness of species and for being particularly poorly explored is propose. Parablechnum yariguense, an endemic fern species, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular analyses. Although it is molecularly nested with P. loxense and P. stipitellatum, morphologically it resembles P. cordatum complex. However, it can be distinguished from related species by its bicolorous rhizome scales, sterile petiole and rachis with papillae abaxially, aerophore absent, and shorter sterile pinnae. The preliminary conservation assessment suggests that P. yariguense is Data Deficient due to limited information of its extent of occurrence.
