Tabernaemontana chamelensis Tabernaemontana litoralis taxonomy Tabernaemontaneae Tabernamontaninae Eudicots

Abstract

A synoptical revision of the genus Tabernaemontana (Apocynaceae) in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, is presented. The genus is represented in the state by nine species. There were two major findings: first, we report Tabernaemontana litoralis as a new record for the flora of Guerrero; second, we propose a new species, distinguished from other Mexican taxa by its unique combination of white and hypocrateriform corollas with an exceptionally long and narrow tube, and distinctive morphology of the suprastaminal appendages. We compare the new species to the morphologically similar T. chamelensis, T. abbreviata, and T. markgrafiana. To facilitate identification, we provide a diagnostic key to the Tabernaemontana species of Guerrero and a synopsis with updated taxonomic and distributional data. These discoveries contribute to the understanding of the American Tabernaemontana, underscoring Guerrero as a region of diversity for the genus in Mexico, particularly within the tropical dry forest ecosystem.
