Agave schidigera complex gypsiferous soil flora Filiferae group La Salada Tecomán Monocots

Abstract

Agave hernandezverae sp. nov. (sect. Littaea, Agavaceae, Asparagales) is described and illustrated. It is endemic to La Salada, Tecomán, in southwestern Colima. It contributes to the understanding of species diversity in gypsum-rich habitats. It resembles Agave colimana but differs in having fewer leaves, larger leaf area, parabolically arched leaves, shorter flowers, ovaries, tepals and anthers, and shorter and narrower capsules. A dichotomous key to the species of Agave sect. Littaea is provided. An updated distribution map of the species of Agave sect. Littaea in the Pacific slopes of the Mexican states of Colima, Jalisco and Michoacán is also provided, featuring biogeographic provinces.
