Abstract

Ponthieva ravenii is described as a new orchid species from Yanachaga Chemillén National Park in central Peru. The species is characterized by its terrestrial habit, cochleate and 3-veined lateral sepals with rounded-obtuse apices and a callose protuberance toward the apex on the abaxial surface, triangular-ovate petals with auriculate bases and glabrous margins, and a relatively large lip with a subquadrate basal portion and a broad distal portion abruptly expanded into a suborbicular to flabellate disc, divided into two large symmetrical lobes by a distinct apical cleft. The new species is compared with the most morphologically similar species of the Ponthieva rostrata group. A detailed description, illustrations, a morphological comparison, information on its distribution and ecology, a preliminary assessment of its conservation status, and a key to the species of the Ponthieva rostrata group are provided.
