Abstract

One of the most unexplored terrestrial habitats are the permafrost, which contain unique fungi which are adapted to low nutrient conditions, longer duration of freezing temperatures, and freeze–thaw cycles. During a study on cultivable fungi associated with India’s Ladakh, Drang Drung Glacier permafrost soil, we isolated an interesting novel fungus, which was characterized using an integrative taxonomic approach. Morphological study, along with multigene phylogenetic analysis, showed that the new isolate represents a different and distinct evolutionary lineage within the family Lindgomycetaceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes). This lineage is phylogenetically distinct, clearly separated and statistically well supported from all currently existing recognized genera within this family, assuring the formation of a new genus and species. This novel fungus is distinct based on its unique morphological characteristics and phylogenetic divergence from its closest relatives. The discovery of this novel taxon expands the already known taxonomic diversity of fungi falling under Lindgomycetaceae and additionally focuses on the permafrost soil habitats of the Indian Himalayan region as a significant reservoir of the undescribed fungal lineages. This study emphasizes the importance of continued exploration of extreme cold terrestrial habitats for unveiling the hidden fungal diversity and advancing our knowledge of fungal evolution and their adaptation to constantly frozen ecosystems.
