Fungi new species ant-nest diffusible pigmentation secondary metabolite Thailand

Abstract

Ants are a biologically significant group of insects, classified in the family Formicidae. Typically, ants are found in terrestrial ecosystems, including subterranean habitats and within trunks, branches, or subcortical cavities. Ant-fungus interaction is a complex form of symbiosis, encompassing both parasitic and mutualistic partnerships. In the current study, we isolated a novel microfungal species, Kosmimatomyces formicicola, from an ant-nest during a microfungal survey in Northern Thailand. We confirmed species novelty through a combination of phenotypic characters and multigene phylogeny using LSU, ITS, tef1-α, and rpb2 sequence data. Phylogenetically, K. formicicola was found to be a member of the family Capnodiaceae, forming a sister clade to K. alatophylus. Optimum growth occurred at 25 °C, while retarded growth was observed at 20 °C and 30 °C. A diffusible pigmentation was observed in cultures incubated at 20 °C and 25 °C, but not at 30 °C. This indicates that elevated temperatures may influence secondary metabolite production in K. formicicola.
