Abstract
During a survey of endophytic fungi associated with Haloxylon persicum, six fungal isolates were obtained from the shoots of healthy white saxaul plants collected in North Khorasan Province, Iran. Morphological examination and phylogenetic analyses based on a concatenated four-locus dataset comprising the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS), partial large subunit nuclear ribosomal DNA (LSU), β-tubulin (TUB2), and the second-largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2) revealed three novel taxa within the family Chaetomiaceae. Consequently, a new genus, Saxaulicola gen. nov., is introduced to accommodate Saxaulicola iranica sp. nov., together with two new species, Carteromyces haloxyloni sp. nov. and Carteromyces khorasaniensis sp. nov. Saxaulicola is distinguished from its closest phylogenetic relatives, Oidiosporium and Carteromyces, by its solitary ascomata covered with a dense mass of hyaline, septate, coiled hyphae-like structures, a perithecial wall composed of textura angularis, ellipsoidal ascospores bearing a distinct apical germ pore, and the production of both conidia and chlamydospores. C. haloxyloni differs from the type species, C. arctostaphyli, in possessing ovoid ascospores, whereas C. khorasaniensis is distinguished by narrower ascospores with apical germ pores. Furthermore, both newly described species produce an asexual morph, a feature not previously reported in the genus. An identification key to the currently accepted species of Carteromyces is also provided
