Abstract

Tetrataenium manipurense (Apiaceae), a new species from Manipur, Northeast India is described and illustrated. Morphologically allied to T. manilalianum and T. shrirangii, it is readily distinguished by some distinct vegetative and reproductive characters. It has a significantly longer, cylindrical rootstock (up to 40 cm) and linear to linear-lanceolate leaflets with entire margin, a longer peduncles (10–20 cm) and elliptical to oblong-oval schizocarps with an emarginate apex and, finally, is anatomically distinct, possessing 2 dorsal and 2 lateral vallecular vittae, alongside 2 commissural vittae. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of the ITS2 and matK barcode regions via Maximum Likelihood (ML) inference confirm its placement within Tetrataenium and support its novel status as a distinct species. The new species is provisionally categorized as Least Concern (LC) in accordance with the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria based on available data.
