Abstract
A new species, Mallomonas lunaris sp. nov., is described from Vietnam based on silica-scale morphology studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Mallomonas lunaris belongs to section Torquatae and is most similar to M. lusca. Its scales have 4–9 conspicuous rounded pits, each surrounded by a rim with delicate papillae. These pits are located at the angle of the posterior submarginal rib, along the posterior submarginal rib, and near the anterior submarginal rib. Mallomonas lunaris has been observed in two localities in Vietnam. Additional studies of the ultrastructure of the scales of Mallomonas lusca were conducted. They showed that on the scale shield, up to two pits with an internal elevation (“island”) can be formed in addition to the pit in the angle of the posterior submarginal rib.
