Abstract

During our ongoing survey of fungal diversity in Sichuan Province, China, we isolated an unidentified fungus collected from a dead branch of an unidentified woody angiosperm. Based on the initial BLAST results of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), the isolate was preliminarily identified as a species of Coryneum. To clarify its taxonomic status, we used the combined ITS, the partial nuclear ribosomal large subunit rRNA (LSU), the RNA polymerase II second largest subunit region (rpb2), and the translation elongation factor 1-α region (tef1-α) for phylogenetic analyses, which showed that the isolate forms a distinct lineage within Coryneum. Morphologically, Coryneum chengduense can be distinguished from its phylogenetically close species, C. lanciforme and C. depressum, by its smaller conidia and fewer distosepta. Therefore, based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence, we introduce this collection as Coryneum chengduense sp. nov.
