Bambusicolous fungi in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, China: Establishing a new species, two new combinations, and a new synonym in Ebollia

Fungi 1 new species bambusicolous fungi Stictidaceae South China sexual morph

Abstract

Bambusicolous fungi were relatively well-documented in Hong Kong SAR during the early 2000s; however, subsequent studies have largely shifted to southwestern China and Thailand, leaving Guangdong Province, a key region within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, largely unexplored in this regard. In the present study, a previously unknown species was isolated from decaying bamboo in Guangdong Province, China. Morphological characteristics and multi-locus phylogenetic analysis of combined LSU, ITS, and SSU sequence data identified the collection as a novel species, namely Ebollia bambusae. The new species is distinguished from the other sexual species within Ebollia by its hemispherical apothecia with a partially exposed opening, rather than subglobose to globose apothecia with an entirely exposed opening. In addition, Fitzroyomyces filiformis and F. pseudopandanicola are transferred to Ebollia as E. filiformis and E. pseudopandanicola, respectively . Fitzroyomyces heterocladae is synonymized under Ebollia carnea. The results further enrich the known diversity of Ebollia associated with bamboo substrates in China, and provide new insights into the taxonomy and phylogeny of the genus.
