Taxonomic treatment of Brazilian Lorostemon (Clusiaceae)

Abstract

Lorostemon Ducke is distributed in Brazil, Colombia, Guyana and Peru and Venezuela with five species: L. bombaciflorus Ducke, L. coelhoi Paula, L. colombianus Maguire, L. roseoviridis Ferr.-Silva & L. Marinho and L. stipitatus Maguire. In Brazil, it is restricted to the states of Amazonas, Pará and Rondônia in well-preserved areas of the Amazonia, usually associated with terra-firme environments. The need for reproductive structures limits identification, which is difficult based only on vegetative characteristics. The objective of this study is to provide the first taxonomic review for the genus in Brazil. We present here the first record of L. stipitatus in Brazil, as well as the first images of the plant in vivo. The taxonomic treatment consists of morphological descriptions of the species, identification key, phenological data, habitat, distribution map, taxonomic comments and images in vivo for each species.
