Fungi 2 new taxa molecular phylogeny morphology taxonomy

Abstract

During a survey of microfungi associated with grassland vegetation in Yunnan Province, China, we discovered two new species, Albotricha zhaotongensis (Hyaloscyphaceae, Helotiales) and Trichomerium yunnanense (Trichomeriaceae, Chaetothyriales) based on morphological and multigene phylogenetic analyses. Albotricha zhaotongensis is characterized by scattered, superficial apothecia, with cylindrical hairs covered by brown granules, and fusoid, one-septate ascospores. Trichomerium yunnanense is distinguished by its cylindrical, branched, smooth, dark brown hyphae constricted at the septa, with ellipsoidal, one-septate terminal cells. The new taxa are supported by combined analyses of LSU, ITS, and rpb2 sequence data for A. zhaotongensis, and SSU, LSU, ITS, mtSSU, tub2, and rpb1 data for T. yunnanense. A comprehensive summary of Trichomerium species is provided, covering their hosts, geographic origins, and global morphological variation.
