Fungi 1 new species 1 new record asexual morph phylogeny taxonomy

Abstract

A survey of lignicolous freshwater fungi in Yunnan Province, China, resulted in the collection of two hyphomycetous Codinaea species from submerged decaying wood: one new species and one new geographical record. Through detailed morphological examination and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, and tef1-α sequence data, Codinaea nujiangensis is described as a new species, while C. paniculata is documented as a new geographical record for China. Codinaea nujiangensis is distinguished by erect, unbranched, thick-walled conidiophores and reniform, hyaline to subhyaline, thin-walled, guttulate conidia with straight or gently curved setulae at both ends. Specimens of C. paniculata collected from Lianghe County showed no morphological differences from those at the type locality. The two Codinaea species can be differentiated by conidial shape and the presence or absence of setae. Detailed descriptions, illustrations, and phylogenetic analysis results of the two taxa are provided, with morphological comparisons with closely related taxa. These findings enrich our knowledge of freshwater fungal diversity in southwestern China, expand the known distribution of Codinaea species, and provide new taxonomic and phylogenetic data for future studies of Chaetosphaeriaceae.
