Abstract

Bauhinia goldmanii Rose is widely distributed in Chiapas (Mexico), extending into Guatemala, however, morphologically distinct populations from Oaxaca and Veracruz suggested the existence of a taxonomic complex in the region and highlighted the need for a taxonomic revision. Therefore, this study examined all relevant specimens from the MEXU as well as from the F and MO herbaria and recircuscribed this taxon as comprising two distinct populations: Bauhinia goldmanii var. zapoteca R. Torres & A. Saynes var. nov. it is endemic to the dry forests of the municipalities of Magdalena Tlacotepec and San Bartolo Yautepec (Oaxaca), and Bauhinia sousae R. Torres sp. nov., it is endemic to Xalapa, Veracruz (Mexico), near to Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, while B. goldmanii var. goldmanii is distributed from the in the foothills of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas (Mexico) and Guatemala.
