Cosmarium hiranoi sp. nov (Zygnematophyceae, Desmidiaceae): a new desmid species from a lake in Oasis Larsemann Hills (East Antarctica)

Abstract

Desmid previously identified as Cosmarium clepsydra Nordstedt (including several infraspecific taxa) from lakes in the Larsemann Hills Oasis (East Antarctica) was collected from the same locality and studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that the examined cells differ significantly in morphology from C. clepsydra and are therefore described as a new species, Cosmarium hiranoi sp. nov.
