Morphology and phylogeny reveal Russula subpunctipes sp. nov., from southern China

Abstract

In this study, Russula subpunctipes sp. nov. collected from Hubei Province, central China, is described and illustrated based on both morphological data and phylogenetic analysis. It is characterized by a sulfur yellow to honey yellow pileus, a cracked cuticle and margin, a tuberculate-striate pileus margin, a henna lamellar edge, henna warts on the hollow stipe and a faint fragrant odor. Both molecular and morphological analyses consistently placed R. subpunctipes in the Russula section Foetentinae. The morphological differences among R. subpunctipes and closely related taxa are discussed.
