Taxonomic novelties in Onosma (Boraginaceae): two new endemic species from the Zagros Mountains, Iran

Abstract

Two new species of Onosma sect. Aponosma, O. kuhrangensis and O. sabzkuhensis, are described and illustrated from the Central Zagros Mountains, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province, Iran. Onosma kuhrangensis is morphologically most similar to O. bodeana, from which it differs by the shape and size of basal leaves, cauline leaf morphology, shorter calyx in both flowering and fruiting stages, broader calyx lobes, smaller bracts, shorter clavate corolla, smaller anthers, eremocarp morphology, and a sparsely hairy annulus. Onosma sabzkuhensis resembles O. sheidaii and O. cornuta, but differs from both species by a combination of characters including plant height, absence of basal leaves, cauline leaf morphology, corolla shape and size, calyx dimensions, anther size, eremocarp morphology. In addition, the corolla color differs from that of O. sheidaii, and the annulus is glabrous, unlike the hairy annulus of O. cornuta. Detailed morphological descriptions, diagnostic notes, phenology, distribution, habitat, conservation status, and color photographs are provided.
