Abstract
A new species of Psammogeton Edgew. (Apiaceae), Psammogeton jasrotaensis P. Bhellum & R. Magotra, is described and illustrated from Jammu and Kashmir, India. The new species is morphologically allied to P. suchaniensis, sharing the characteristic reduced peduncle in the inflorescence, but differs in a combination of vegetative and reproductive characters, including plant habit, leaf segmentation, number of leaves per node, trichotomous branched stems, involucre bracts, involucel bracteoles, number of rays, fruit morphology, vittae arrangement, and stylopodium morphology. The species is currently known only from Jasrota, locality in a hilly environment. A detailed description, illustrations, photographs, ecological notes, and a comparison with morphologically similar species are provided. The discovery of P. jasrotaensis highlights the still inadequately explored diversity of Psammogeton in the northwestern Himalaya and contributes to a better understanding of species diversity within the genus.
