Algae Staurocarteria pronucleata nomenclature green algae

Abstract

In 2023, a new genus of quadriflagellate chlamydomonadalean green algae, Staurocarteria Y.L.Chen & G.X.Liu (Chen et al. 2023: 465), was described based on morphology and molecular phylogeny of strains isolated from China. Among four offered species, a new combination was proposed, “Staurocarteria inversa (Korshikov) Y.L.Chen & G.X.Liu”, supposedly based upon Carteria crucifera var. inversa Korshikov (1938: 131, fig. 124). But Korshikov (1939) in footnote on p. 105 informed: “Carteria crucifera var. inversa was first described by me back in 1927. … I’m taking this opportunity to change its original name, which I don’t think is very felicitous” [translation from Russian].
