Taxonomic revision of the genus Psammogeton Edgew. (Apiaceae) in India

Abstract

Psammogeton Edgew. is a small but taxonomically complex genus of the family Apiaceae (tribe Pimpinelleae), predominantly distributed in arid and semi-arid regions of Asia. Globally, the genus comprises approximately 20 accepted species, of which 13 species represent in India and India is one of the important centres of diversity. Recently intensive field explorations have revealed a significantly higher species richness, particularly in north-western India. The present study provides a comprehensive taxonomic revision of Psammogeton in India based on extensive field collections made between 2020 to 2025, critical examination of type materials, and detailed morphological and carpological analyses. Eight species are described by authors in the country. In this revision, all species are treated with updated nomenclature, detailed descriptions, phenology, habitat preferences, distributional data, and diagnostic characters. An identification key to the Indian species is provided, along with photographic documentation and illustrations. This revision clarifies species delimitation within Psammogeton in India and highlights the significance of the north-western Himalayan region as a centre of diversity for the genus.
