Eastern Amazon Leptostemonum Northeast Brazil Solanales Eudicots

Abstract

During the review of the spiny species of Solanum from Maranhão state, in the Brazilian Northeast region, a new species was discovered in an urbanized vegetation remnant within the Amazon Rainforest domain. Solanum longisepalum belongs to the minor clade Erythrotrichum and is morphologically characterized by its long and branched inflorescence, calyx lobes that are almost twice as long as in S. paludosum, white corolla and porrect-stellate trichomes with short midpoints distributed along the plant, excepted for the calyx and corolla. We present a taxonomic treatment with illustrations, geographic distribution, taxonomic comments, preliminary conservation status, and a taxonomic identification key for the species of clade Erythrotrichum in Maranhão state.
