Abstract

Lanonia yangchunensis (Arecaceae, Coryphoideae), a new species from Yangchun in Guangdong province, China, is described and illustrated. Morphologically, this species is distinguished from other Lanonia species by its short and subterranean stem, leaf blades split into one or two segments, unarmed petioles, and staminate and pistillate flowers solitary on the rachillae. The relationship of the new species within Lanonia is also corroborated by evidence from phylogenetic analyses based on plastid DNA sequences.
