Abstract

A new species, Mallomonas acidophila sp. nov., is described from Vietnam based on silica-scale morphology observed using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Mallomonas acidophila belongs to section Papillosae and is most similar to M. preisigii, described from fossil deposits. Scales of Mallomonas acidophila have a shallow elongated dome, which is recessed from the distal margin and located at different angles to the longitudinal axis, with papillae on the shield and dome, the absence of pores on the base plate and the wide posterior flange, and partially covered with the secondary siliceous layer in the area adjacent to the V-rib. The bristles of the newly described species are short, with a bifurcated apex and a hook-shaped foot. The new species has been found in two acidified and humic water bodies located in the coastal area in Thua Thien Hue Province.
