Abstract

Aurantiascoma belongs to Teichosporaceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes), which currently comprises five species. Most species of the genus are reported in their sexual morphs except for A. nephelii, which is known only in its asexual morph. Aurantiascoma quercus has been documented in both sexual and asexual morphs. In the present study, we introduce a new species of Aurantiascoma from China, which is identified through morphological examinations and multigene phylogenetic analyses (LSU, ITS, SSU, tef1-α and rpb2). The novel taxon is herein described as Aurantiascoma phillipsii and is also the first species of the genus reported from the bark of Rosaceae. This species is distinguished from the extant members by having ascomata that are superficially embedded in the bark and covered by remnants of the host and strictly 1-septate, hyaline to rarely pale yellow ascospores. In addition, the present phylogenetic analyses revealed a close relationship between Parateichospora and Aurantiascoma species, and we discussed their potential taxonomic placement and the issues in detail. A comprehensive morphological and phylogenetic comparison of species within Aurantiascoma is also presented.
