Abstract

A new species of Lepanthes (Orchidaceae: Pleurothallidinae) from the lower montane forest of Yanachaga Chemillén National Park, Pasco, Peru, is described and illustrated. Lepanthes ashaninka is similar to L. ortegae, but differs in having subcongested inflorescences on the adaxial surface of the leaf, a much shorter pseudopeduncle and pedicels; a triangular, acute dorsal sepal; petals with an oblong-elliptic upper lobe and an oblong-lanceolate lower lobe; a smaller curved marginal process with a denticulate lower margin; a white lip suffused with purplish-pink; and a longer purple column with a dorsal anther bearing two projections 0.5–0.6 mm long. The description is accompanied by line drawings, color photographs, and information on its distribution, phenology, ecology, conservation status, and affinities with related species.
