Resolving Taxonomic Ambiguity in the Graphidaceae: Phaeographina torquescens and Sarcographina subtorquescens are Synonyms of Sarcographa glyphiza

Abstract

The taxonomic identity of the type material of Phaeographina torquescens (basionym: Glyphis torquescens) and Sarcographina subtorquescens (basionym: Glyphis subtorquescens) housed at the Finnish Museum of Natural History, Helsinki (H-NYL) is critically re-evaluated and found to be conspecific with Sarcographa glyphiza. Henceforth, both taxa are synonymized under S. glyphiza. This taxonomic revision is based on a thorough examination of all available type specimens, including detailed morphological, anatomical, and chemical analyses, as well as distributional data. The findings help resolve long-standing nomenclatural ambiguities within the Graphidaceae and contribute to a more precise understanding of species delimitation and synonymy in the group.
