Abstract
Suillus is a genus of mushroom-forming fung of significant research interest and is widely distributed across the UK. This study provides an overview of the taxonomy, DNA barcode identification, and biogeography of British Suillus collections maintained by the Kew Fungarium and recorded by the British Mycological Society (BMS). Citations, taxonomic references, and type-specimen records were compiled, revealing multiple gaps in typification. Recent Kew Fungarium collections were rDNA barcoded (ITS1) and compared to existing sequences in GenBank. Most morphological identifications in the Fungarium were corroborated by DNA barcoding. The resulting phylogenetic tree, although constrained using a partial barcode, reflects relationships reported in previous studies, including unresolved species complexes. Occurrence data from the BMS were mapped to illustrate species’ geographic distributions across the UK and, in a separate analysis, correlated with collection dates to investigate potential changes in distribution over time. A dichotomous key to the species examined in this study is also provided.
