Abstract

Seventeen new records of liverworts based on the examination of unidentified specimens collected during the second half of the twentieth century in eastern Cuba and deposited in the JE, EGR and HAC herbaria, as well as the uncovering of three new species, namely Diplasiolejeunea guantanamensis sp. nov., Lejeunea aphanopapillata sp. nov., and Rectolejeunea bissei sp. nov. are reported and described. A further interesting Diplasiolejeunea specimen, which had been studied, but unfortunately is now lost, is treated under section “Informal description of a potential new taxon”. Information regarding general distribution of species and their habitats is also provided. This study highlights the importance of herbarium collections as a documentation of biodiversity both from a specific geographic area and an epoch. Unfortunately, as most of the collected specimens are rather scanty, it also highlights the need for vascular plant botanists to include bryologists or cryptogamists in their fieldwork in order to make more comprehensive and better quality collections of bryophytes or cryptogams.
