Abstract
Ant nests offer a unique microhabitat that supports diverse and exclusive fungal communities. An anamorphic fungal taxon was isolated from the wall of an ant nest from Yunnan Province, China. Maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis based on combined ITS, LSU and RPB2 gene sequences revealed that our isolate forms a distinct subclade within Xenodevriesiaceae, Mycosphaerellales, sister to Xenodevriesia. Hence, a new taxon, Exsiccatiomyces formicarium gen. et sp. nov., is introduced. This taxon is characterized by thick-walled, septate hyphae that form chlamydospores. Primary and secondary ramoconidia vary in shape; sub-cylindrical to doliiform conidia and sub-cylindrical to ellipsoidal conidia are pale brown to olivaceous. This study highlights the ecological and physiological significance of ant nest-associated fungi, contributing to the growing knowledge of fungal biodiversity in specialized microhabitats.
