Taxonomic synopsis of Coryanthes (Orchidaceae, Epidendroideae, Cymbidieae, Stanhopeinae) from Pará State, Brazil

Abstract

Coryanthes is a Neotropical genus with approximately 60 species distributed from southern Mexico to southeastern Brazil. In the latter country, it is represented by 24 species, 13 of which are endemic and found mainly in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest. Taxonomic information on the genus is scarce, mostly scattered across classical literature and related to the discovery of new species or floristic studies on Orchidaceae. We present a taxonomic synopsis for the Coryanthes species occurring in the Pará State, which includes: i) a new species, Coryanthes ecallosa; ii) the re-establishment and typification of C. biflora and associated names; iii) the synonymization of C. rodriguesii and C. mystax under C. biflora; and, iv) the exclusion of C. albertinae, C. bruchmuelleri, C. cataniapoensis, C. maculata and C. senghasiana, previously cited for the Pará State. The new species is described, illustrated, and commented on regarding its conservation status and systematic position. Coryanthes biflora is described, due to changes in its circumscription. All recorded species are arranged in an identification key, represented by photographs, mapped, and commented on their geographic distribution, flowering and fruiting seasons, and morphological relationships.
