Abstract
In the treatment of Kalanchoe (Crassulaceae [subfam. Cotyledonoideae] tr. Kalanchoeae]) that was published in Flora capensis in 1862 by William H. Harvey, the presence of K. crenata, an essentially tropical African species, was recorded for southeastern South Africa. However, K. crenata does not occur in South Africa and material from the country thus far treated under this name is here described as a new species, for which the name K. cloeteae is published. It had recently been shown that K. hirta, also a southern African species, which for a long time had been treated as a synonym of K. crenata, warrants recognition as an accepted species. The new species described here, K. cloeteae, is compared to the tropical African K. crenata from which it is separated, and preferentially and deliberately in more detail to the South African K. klopperae with which it shares some morphological similarities. Both K. cloeteae and K. klopperae are illustrated, along with historical botanical illustrations of K. crenata that contextualises a better understanding of the latter species.
