Abstract
Armeria campanae, a new species of Armeria (Plumbaginaceae) group alpina, is described and illustrated from the southern Iberian System (Guadalajara Province, Spain). The species is morphologically close to Armeria cantabrica, but it differs in its wider and somewhat succulent leaves with 3–5 foliar nerves, the outer bracts slightly longer than the median ones, smaller calyx and corolla colour whitish-pink, or even completely white. The ITS sequences of A. campanae are genetically identical to A. trachyphylla and they related it the eastern Iberian species (A. campanae, A. trachyphylla, A. montiberica, and A. fontqueri) and the endemic species of Corsica and Sardinia in the phylogenetic tree. We discussed our results in relation to the complexity exhibited by the genus Armeria, which has undergone reticulate evolution.
