Algae Cladophorales ITS phylogeny SSU/LSU rDNA taxonomy

Abstract

Chamaedoris is an exclusively marine genus of green macroalgae distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It currently comprises three recognized species, with C. peniculum being the only one reported for the Atlantic Ocean, including Brazil. An integrative taxonomic study on Chamaedoris from the northeastern coast of Brazil, combining morphology and nuclear ribosomal markers (SSU, LSU, and ITS1), confirmed the presence of C. peniculum along the Brazilian coast and provided evidence for a new deep-water species, Chamaedoris xavieri sp. nov. Morphologically, the new species is characterized by a flabelliform capitulum, very long apical cells, branched tenacular cells, presence of capituliform filament-like proliferations below the apical portion, and three superimposed cells at the distal end of the stipe. An updated morphological account and molecular data of Chamaedoris peniculum based on Brazilian specimens are also provided.
