Abstract

Gigantochloa nghiana, is herein described and illustrated as a new paleotropical woody bamboo. Based on characters of the vegetative parts, inflorescences, and fundamental pseudospikelet structures, G. nghiana shows close affinity to G. glabrata, G. multifloscula, G. balui and G. rostrata. However, it can be distinguished from these congeners by its reflexed leaf blades with a concave apex, ovate and straight perfect fertile florets, and a fertile lemma 4–5 mm in length with glabrous margins.
