Abstract

Vernonia calderonii was described almost a century ago and classified in V. sect. Eremosis; it was known only from its type collection. However, its type specimens have been treated as a hybrid, or as a mixed collection, and currently, as a synonym. To clarify this situation, protologues, distribution areas and morphology of V. calderonii, Eremosis leiocarpa and E. standleyi were compared. The evidence obtained allowed us to determine that the type material of V. calderonii corresponds to a mixed collection of E. leiocarpa and E. standleyi, whereas its holotype belongs to the latter species. Microcharacters in combination with macrocharacters provide useful information for recognizing Eremosis taxa with similar morphology. Finally, taxonomic adjustments and an updated description of V. calderonii are provided.
