Abstract

This study presents taxonomic evaluations and discusses the diagnostic characteristics of Allium gulbasanii, a newly identified species from the Karakoçan District of Elazığ. Although the new species is similar to Allium pallens subsp. pallens, A. myrianthum and A. convallarioides in terms of its fistulose leaves, two-valved spathe with widened bases, general appearance of its flowers and tepal color, it differs from these three species with its thicker stem, larger perigone segments, style length, larger triquetrous capsule and seed size. Allium gulbasanii is very different from A. convallarioides in that its stamens are toothless at the base, its leaves are longer, and its spathe valves are longer and have long beaks that taper abruptly. The new species is quite different from A. pallens subsp. pallens with its bulblet characteristics, very long leaves, much longer valved spathe, stamens being longer than the tepals, and the size of the capsule and seeds. Allium gulbasanii differs significantly from A. myrianthum in its longer perigon and anthers, its ovary being 1.5–2 times as long as broad and sessile, its stigma being entire and globose, and its capsule shape and size, as well as its seed size. The general views of the habit, bulb and bulblets, leaves and inflorescences are provided. The ecological data, IUCN conservation status and distribution map of the new species, as well as the distributions of related species are also given.
