Abstract

The study presents two new species described from the northern region of the state of Rio de Janeiro: Anthurium bonetiense and Anthurium marquetianum. Both occur in still poorly studied areas and, to date, are endemic to their respective localities. Anthurium bonetiense is found at Morro do Bonet, in the municipality of Petrópolis, and Anthurium marquetianum occurs in the municipalities of Macaé and Santa Maria Madalena. The recognition of these species highlights the knowledge gap regarding Araceae diversity in the northern region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Although studies published over the last decades have emphasized the floristic richness of the region, they also point to its still under-sampled diversity and reinforce the need for further floristic surveys and conservation actions at both regional and national levels. The new species were recognized and circumscribed based on the identification of diagnostic morphological characters that distinguish them from other species of the genus, through specialized literature review, analysis of herbarium specimens, observation of cultivated plants, and field collections. Descriptions and comparisons with closely related species, diagnoses, illustrations, and comments on geographic distribution, ecology, phenology, and conservation status are provided.
