Abstract
A new species of Araceae, Philodendron angelicanum, endemic to the Atlantic Forest of the state of Rio de Janeiro, belonging to the subgenus Philodendron sect. Macrobelium, is described. Morphologically similar to P. cordatum and P. appendiculatum, the species is differentiated by the striated and flat petiole along the entire length, with obtuse to acute margins and few extra-floral vinaceous nectaries at the base. The leaf blade is lustrous, with repanded margins. The spathe is slightly constricted and the spadix has no sterile apical zone. The ovary has 10–12 locules and 2–3 ovules per locule. The study presents ecological comments on the species, considering its rarity and exclusive occurrence in the municipality of Cachoeiras de Macacu, in fragments of Submontane Dense Ombrophilous Forest. Its area and extent of occurrence are limited, with subpopulations restricted to a small fragment of forest, being classified as “Endangered” (EN), according to the criteria of IUCN (2019) B1ab(i, iv); B2ab(ii, iv).
