Abstract

Elaphoglossum hainanense (Dryopteridaceae), a new fern species from the National Park of Hainan Tropical Rainforest, China, is described. Compared to its Chinese congeners, the most prominent features of this new species are its prominent veins and glabrous laminae. It exhibits morphological similarities to E. acrostichoides, which is distributed in Africa and the western Indian Ocean islands, and to E. angulatum and E. yunnanense from Hainan, China. However, it differs significantly from these three species in leaf and rhizome scale morphology. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on chloroplast rbcL, rps4-trnS, and trnL-trnF sequences shows that all sampled individuals of E. hainanense form a distinct clade. Given its restricted geographic range, small population size and limited number of individuals, E. hainanense should be considered endangered (EN), according to the IUCN Red List categories and criteria.
