Abstract

Clematis shenlungchiaensis (Ranunculaceae) has been previously known only from its type locality, i.e. Shennongjia in western Hubei, China, and herbarium specimens of this species are extremely scanty. It is an imperfectly known species due to the paucity of specimens and the lack of observations of living plants in the wild. In this paper, we reported our discovery of C. shenlungchiaensis from Shaanxi for the first time and our careful observations of living plants of this species in Hubei and Shaanxi. Based on the results, we clarify some morphological characters of this species, add the fruit characters and make amendments to the previous descriptions. The morphological distinction between C. shenlungchiaensis and its most closely similar species, C. pogonandra (including var. alata, var. pilosula, and var. pogonandra), is discussed in detail.
