Trifolium aybarsii (Fabaceae): A new species from Türkiye

Biology Program, Institute of Pure and Applied Sciences, Marmara University, İstanbul, Türkiye

clovers diagonal endemizm subsection systematic Türkiye Eudicots

Abstract

The genus Trifolium comprises about 299 species distributed worldwide, with 106 species currently recorded from Türkiye. During the revision of the genus for the Illustrated Flora of Türkiye, an unidentified and specimen from Yaylım Mountain (Elazığ Province, eastern Türkiye) was discovered in the FUH herbarium. Elazığ is part of the Anatolian diagonal, which has a rich endemic population. Detailed morphological examination revealed that it represents a distinct taxon, here described as Trifolium aybarsii M.Keskin & Sonay, sp. nov., and placed in a new subsection, subsect. Aybarsii M.Keskin, within sect. Trifolium. The new species shows morphological affinity with T. ochroleucon Hudson but can be easily distinguished by a consistent combination of calyx and leaf characters.
