Abstract
A new species of columnar cactus, Corryocactus volcanicus, from the Valle de los Volcanes in the department of Arequipa (southern Peru) is described and illustrated. Morphological comparisons are made with two related species, i.e. C. brevistylus and C. brachypetalus. The new species differs in the size and colour of the flowers, morphology of the spines on the fruits, and seeds. Original photographs of the new species and a distribution map are provided. Additionally, the IUCN Red List conservation status of Endangered is proposed.
