Abstract

Mallomonas capitata sp. nov. is described from Vietnam based on silica-scale morphology examined using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The new species is characterized by a narrowing in the distal part of the scale, a large broadly oval dome with ribs, the presence of an expansion with a spine of the anterior submarginal rib on one side of the dome, and meshes along the V-rib, anterior submarginal ribs and dome on the shield. Based on scale ultrastructure, the new species is assigned to section Mallomonas. To date, M. capitata has been recorded only in four nearby localities, suggesting limited distribution.
