A new species of Gyroporus (Gyroporaceae, Boletales) from Swat, Pakistan

Abstract

A new species, Gyroporus swaticus, is described from the Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. The species is distinguished based on both morphological features and molecular data, using nrITS and nLSU gene region sequences, which validate its unique status. Gyroporus swaticus is characterized by a flat to concave and brown to orange brown pileus, adnate hymenophore, broadly ellipsoid to elongate basidiospores (6.6 × 4.3 μm), broadly clavate basidia, mostly lageniform and fusiform pleurocystidia, a trichodermium pileipellis, and a cutis stipitipellis. Phylogenetically, G. swaticus formed an independent and well-supported lineage within Gyroporus section Castaneus. The taxonomic description, phylogenetic analyses, illustrations, and comparison with closely related taxa are provided.
