Abstract

Hypoxylaceous fungi commonly occur as saprophytes and endophytes, playing important roles in nutrient cycling and biological interactions within forest ecosystems. In this study, we describe Hypoxylon omphalostiolatum, a novel species isolated from a decaying branch of an unidentified plant in Sichuan Province, China, based on morphological characteristics and multi-locus phylogenetic analysis. The phylogenetic analysis using sequence data from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), large subunit ribosomal RNA (LSU), the second-largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (rpb2), and beta-tubulin (tub2) revealed that our isolates form a distinct clade closely related to H. guiyangense and H. guizhouense. Hypoxylon omphalostiolatum differs from those species by having dark brown stromata, larger perithecia, inconspicuous and umbilicate ostioles, and longer asci. This study contributes to the understanding of Hypoxylon diversity and highlights the importance of polyphasic taxonomy in fungal classification.
