arborescent kalanchoes endemic lectotype Madagascar Eudicots

Abstract

Although the vast majority of kalanchoes are low-growing herbs or medium-sized shrubs, in terms of growth form a small group of four Malagasy kalanchoes (Crassulaceae subfam. Cotyledonoideae) attain arborescent dimensions. These are Kalanchoe arborescens, K. beharensis, K. dinklagei, and K. grandidieri. All four species are endemic to southern Madagascar. The type of the name of one of these, the aptly named K. arborescens, is the type of the recently reinstated K. subg. Calophygia. The nomenclature of K. arborescens is revisited and corrected. The second-step lectotype of the name K. arborescens designated here is illustrated.
