On the identity and distribution of Chrysopogon velutinus (Poaceae: Andropogoneae) and its taxonomic comparison with allied species in India

Abstract

Andropogon velutinus (a basionym of Chrysopogon velutinus) is lectotypified by selecting one of the original materials housed at the Kew Herbarium. So far, the species is only known to occur in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana in Peninsular India. However, it has seemingly been reported from Kerala state, but we did not find any confirmed specimens in the consulted herbaria. Chrysopogon velutinus is quite similar to C. fulvus, and it has been misidentified as the latter on many occasions. We discussed the correct identity and distribution of C. velutinus in India and also compared it with the C. fulvus complex. A photo plate of the specimen of C. fulvus resembling an African species Chrysopogon plumulosus is also given to show the extremity of variable forms in Chrysopogon fulvus complex. A key to distinguishing closely allied species is provided for precise identification. Additionally, photo plates showing varying habitats and morphological characters of C. velutinus are included and also distribution map showing the occurrence of the species in India.
