Abstract

The peculiar agaric species described as Lentinus degener (≡ Neolentinus degener) was commonly considered identical to Neolentinus cyathiformis or N. schaefferi in the scientific literature and the correct name of this species is controversial even today. The aim of our study was to discuss the nomenclature of this species and take a step towards resolving application of the name Lentinus degener by designating a type (lectotype). In addition, sequence data from the universal fungal barcode region (nrDNA internal transcribed spacer, ITS1–5.8S–ITS2), as well as the nrDNA 28S (large subunit), and two protein coding gene regions (Tef-1α, rpb2) obtained from the epitype specimen (designated in this study as well) are also presented for further taxonomic or systematic studies in the important brown-rot family Gloeophyllaceae.
