Abstract

Strains of Mallomonas favosa f. favosa and Mallomonas favosa f. gemina from Vietnam have been studied. Their phylogenetic position was revealed using the SSU rDNA + rbcL cpDNA dataset. The ultrastructure of the scales and bristles was studied using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. A new combination was proposed: Mallomonas gemina comb. et stat. nov. The morphological features of the species are discussed in this paper. Based on a revision of the published data, the distribution of Mallomonas gemina was clarified. Mallomonas gemina is recorded mainly in tropical and subtropical areas in Asia.
